Hi Engineers,
I am designing a manhole and have the base pressure to be more than the bearing capacity of the soil. I don't want to increase the base size or introduce anything like piles.
Any ideas?

Must be poor soil conditions!
You could consider soil remediation using injection methods. Get with geotech and determine reason for low bearing capacity

Thanks, I really appreciate this.

If that is the case, how does the soil support itself in place?

You can use grouting to improve soil conditions. It will be better to use geo-grids if possible. Also keep an eye out for pore water pressure.
