Hi experts,

I am currently working for a Air Cooled Hrat Exchanger firm. We very often need to perform modal analysis for chceking natural frequency structures whether they are resonant with fan frequency.

Any references for basic understanding of vibration analysis would be greatly appreciated.

I'd divide it up into two bits, getting good data and analysing the data. Luckily Bruel and Kjaer have taught generations of engineers to do the first bit. The primers at have a great deal in them. The textbooks are also good.

For the analysis a random web search on Introduction to experimental modal analysis threw up many free resources. is pretty typical in that it is stronger on the analysis than the data acquisition.

Your local university may host 3 day introductory sessions on Modal Analysis by any of the major instrumentation companies, if so that will get you up to speed far faster than any book.

Incidentally there is a load of tosh written about both subjects, if you are looking for practical results. Eyeglazing accounts of matrix manipulation are a hint that you are reading about some computational farrago rather than real people's work in the lab.

Cheers

Bruel and Kjaer used to offer week long seminars. I'll bet they still do. I just received an email link from Vibration Research. They do webinars:

Fundamentals of VibrationVIEW Part 2 Webinar
Random Vibration Theory

Hi Sir or Madam,
Please join us for the next Vibration Research educational webinar! This month we will be discussing Random Vibration Theory and specifically concentrating on the Power Spectral Density Graph.
After a brief introduction to random vibration testing theory, we will talk at length about the PSD calculation and how it is used in random vibration testing.

The PSD is the method used to observe and understand random vibration, it gives engineers and technicians the ability to view the distribution of a signals strength over a band of frequencies and is used to measure the strength of a signal. How is this PSD generated, what is the calculation actually displaying, and what methods are available for generating a smooth PSD?
