Beam sitting on end of wall

Hi,

I have a window lintol sitting onto a 100mm wall 90 degrees to the wall. But....It's at the end of the wall though. I'm not comfortable with the detail as the load spread is only in 1 direction. Anyone do this before??

Haven't done it before, but I suspect you'll only get meaningful answers if you provide more information, including:

1) What (material) type of wall is it?

2) What is the height of the wall?

3) What are the vertical load from the beam and any lateral loading out of plane to wall (axial along beam)?

4) What is the width of the beam?

Whether it will work or not depends largely on how much of the wall is needed to support the beam load and whether the local region of the wall is able to distribute the load to that required length.

Need more descriptions on phrases in bold. A sketch will help.

1) I assume that this is just a beam tying into a wall with the beam and wall oriented orthogonally.

2) I have done this.

3) As to whether or not it's okay, let the numbers be your guide.

4" wall? Very light built, even for reinforced concrete.

I’ve done this plenty of times. HOWEVER - if your lintel is the prestressed type acting compositely with the masonry above (reliant on arching above) then no, you don’t have enough beef in the orthogonal support wall to resist the horizontal thrust.

Hi Mistructe_ire,

Having thought a bit more about it I'm going to reduce the window width and creat a 200mm end bearing for the lintol. I'm going to use a heavy duty lintol which is effectively a UB.
