if i want to do a mep beam splice
and i design the mep for the moment in the beam per say and not the z of the beam

do i need to go back in my structural analysis software and change the section of the beam
at the splice for a z comparable to the mep?

im asking on the premise that AISC MEP examples
want the weld of the flange to be at the capacity of
flange force M/(d-tf)

is this a strict requirement?
or can i pick up capacity from the web welds

what if my flange cannot even carry M/(d-tf)?

dik the shear on your sm file

V.r3:2*(d-2*k)*F.rw*D

i see AISC only using the compression side weld

Beam Web to End Plate Welding:
fw = xxx kips/in. fw = maximum of: (0.60*Fyb)*tw/2 or R/(2*(d/2-tf))

(0.60*Fyb)*tw/2

Beam web to end plate welds in the vicinity of the tension
bolts are designed to develop the yield stress of the
beam web. This weld strength is recommended even if
the full moment capacity of the beam is not required for
frame strength.

R/(2*(d/2-tf))

Only the web to end plate weld between the mid-depth
of the beam and the inside face of the beam compression
flange may be used to resist the beam shear. This
assumption is based on engineering judgment; literature
is not available to substantiate or contradict this assumption.

Thanks... will take a gander...

Don't know... not an AISC guy but will take a peek a little later...

is it due to the tee stub analysis that's used to develop bolt forces?

I'll have to look that up... not familiar with it and currently doesn't make much sense.
