Dear All,

Can anyone give guidelines for location of installing lock ring for bearing applications for fans. Center hung as well as over hung types.
Can both the bearings be installed with lock rings ?

Also the proper location for installation of grease nipple. Which side should it be installed, single corner, both corners, center, if center not possible which best location to have effective greasing till point required. Is the location of grease nipple with respect to the lock nut.

Please guide for both the queries.

Hi APmmore,

As ALWAYS, pictures would sure be helpful.

Does "lock ring" refer to the "fixing ring" used to take up axial clearance in a pillow/plummer block housing to create an axially "fixed" bearing ?

"Can anyone give guidelines for location of installing lock ring for bearing applications for fans.."
Is the question which bearing of the pair should be "fixed" ?
I'd start by trying to understand if there greater danger of shaft axial thermal growth jamming the fan into housing details like inlet cones, -- OR -- misaligning drive belts or using up all the clearance between the shaft ends in direct coupled installations.

Two axially fixed bearings ?
>> If << the support structure is stout, ( axially stiff ) then both bearings may be subjected to a million pounds of axial thrust.

Lots of answers here -

" Note: Only one assembly per shaft should be fixed. "
" The fixing rings, also known as locating rings, stabilizing rings, or stab rings. "

Hi

The fan impeller side bearing has to be fixed axially by using locating rings and the motor side fan bearing has to be free axially to compensate the thermal expansion.

simple way to fix the locate rings measure the bearing width (50mm) and the width of the bearing seating in bearing housing(75mm) the difference 25mm / 2 make to locate rings 12.5 mm width let the bearing seat in center of the bearing housing.
motor side bearing which is called free bearing has to positioned in center of the bearing housing ( both sides of the bearing clearance has to be maintain means don't install locate rings)

the greasing of the bearing best way is lubricating from the center. yes I too use to get the bearing housing which has no provision for center greasing simply make 1/8" BSP thread on the top bearing housing part and use that for lubrication. make sure your bearing should be W33

if any further question pl
