Hi,

ASME BPVC VIII.1 UG-23 MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE STRESS VALUE, chapter (h) states that the maximum bearing stress shall be limited to x time the value in SECTION II.D

Would the casting factor of UG-24 CASTING apply to bearing stress too?

best regards,

I would say so. It is a material anomaly Quality Factor, similar to the various a weld quality factors (depending on level of NDT).

The bearing stress factor is an allowable stress factor.

You apply weld quality factors on top of tension allowable stress.
It makes sense that you apply material quality factor (including weld quality factors) on top of compressive allowable stress.

My gut says no.

I see flaws in welds as crack starters which are only relevant where tension will exist. In loadings where the flaws would be compressed they would have no effect and no reduction factor would be required. For instance, UG-23(b) says the joint efficiency is unity for butt welds under longitudinal compression. I don't see that this statement would change for a compressive bearing stress.
