I'm looking for a Rule of thumb related to Soil/Bulk handling on belt conveyor

Let's assume that we have limestone soil (sand and rock ) and must transport it 10 KM through a Portable/modular Conveyor belt or using ZIP line/Overland belt conveyor.

Is there any research and scientific paper or technical experience that can provide some kind of trusted values about the Specific energy (kWh/t.km)

the basic data is below

Material: Excavated Soil , Limestone Rock , Density = 1.6 Mt / M3 , Water Content = less than 2%
Practical Size: Less than 3” [75 mm]
Flow Rate: 250 to 350 M3 per hour.
Conveyor Belt Width: 50 to 60 cm
Conveyor Belt Shape: Trough Belt Conveyor
Trough Angle: Start from 30 Degrees.
Belt Speed: 2 to 5 meters per Sec.
Angle of transportation = 0 - flat ground level.

You could get some help from the folks at Overland Conveyor Co. -
Also, CEMA has methodology in their book "Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials"

Belt suppliers also have belt sizing software - Conti, Fenner-Dunlop, Goodyear

You can save money on operating expenses by selecting a belt with low rolling resistance, this will also save on components due to lower belt pull forces.

Are you building a new conveyor, or replacing belt on an existing?

thanks for your recommendation, however, we are not a belt conveyor designer, we are an earth-moving Company, and we need to conduct preliminary viability and feasibility study, that is why we are concerned about high level cost as CAPEX .

If you can avoid building supports and can literally run it along at ground level then it looks pretty feasible.

That's a good report linked above.

Usually issue with belts / conveyors is contamination / spillages and they don't like going round corners plus are there any crossings / animal passages required?

But a conversation with one or more vendors will get you some more reliable data.

My thoughts:

1) You ask about a "Specific energy (kWh/t.km)"... I do not believe that such a parameter exists for belt conveyor design because of the various belt types, loadings, elevation changes, etc .. It sound like you want a preliminary motor hp number ... Your question, in my opinion, is vague and like asking for a "miles per gallon" rule for "vehicles" ....

2) Ten kilometers is a long way for a single belt, IMHO ...A single belt 10km long develops start-up and shut down issues, IMHO .. Don't you want to break this study up into multiple belt conveyors ? Perhaps six or eight ? This would enable belt replacement, inspection and maintenance to be more manageable. A belt conveyor considered by the industry to be "long" is typically 0.5 - 1.0 km ....

3) What is your desired tons/hr ? ... Why are you reluctant to post this ?

4) At a lengthy ten kilometers, (and with level terrain) have you considered a relay system of trucks ?

Strongly suggest that you begin conversations with a belt conveyor vendor, as was suggested above

10 kM standalone belt conveyor is doable - Beumer has done many this long and more. Startup and shutdown issues need careful consideration. All of the references listed above can help with this problem. Multiple conveyors result in multiple transfer points which have issues of material flow, material degradation, belt wear, getting power to intermediate points, etc. Trucking does not pay except for very short duration projects. Beumer has literature and background in the justification of conveying over trucking. Follow the hyperlinks for more info...

surly we are not planning to have the 10 KM of belt conveyor as one flight, actually, it will be divided to 300 meter or 700 meters flights

the aim form my questions is: we need to check the feasibility of belt conveyors over truck transportation, the main cost of operation in conveyors is Electricity, thus i'm looking for SEC - specific Energy Consumption as Ws/kg/meter or Kwh/Ton/KM

Why wouldn't you use a single flight if you could? Less transfer points to build (and plug), less belt loading wear at those transfer points, only drives at head and tail end, horizontally- and vertically-curved belt paths are routinely installed.

the application of the conveyor will be for raw material handling (excavated soil ) so it is not a mining nor a cement nor a crusher.

the flights and segments of conveyors shall be movable /Shiftable

Try sticking your parameters into this?
Might be the wrong type of conveyor but at least its a start point.

Its estimating the friction effect on the multiple roller which is where you need to start from in terms of first principles.
