Hi Guys, we have been having trouble with our rotary valves, as gland packing on its seal cassettes come off, due to as we think is failure of adhesive we are using for applying gland packing. Rotary Valve is ZPH 550.1 by OEM Coperion, which recommends us to use Chesterton PTFE Gland Packing Style 1724. Gland Packing has to deal with Purified Terepathalic Acid powder at 120 degree celsius. Please advice the best adhesive for gland packing based on your experience.

My thought (without knowing much about the application) is that you might be running into more significant issue than an adhesive failure.

How quickly is the failure occurring?

We are considering process causes as well for the sudden increase in failure frequency. Previously gland packing was being replaced after every 8 months or more but now it is lasting for few weeks only. We believe adhesive failure is not the only cause for gland packing failure but it definitely is one of the causes.

OEM Coperion has not recommended any adhesive and neither have we been able to get any useful feedback from Chesterton (gland packing OEM).

I would like to mention here that due to plant de-bottle necking we have increased rotary valve's working load from 56 tons / hr to 60 tons/ hr but we have also increased the flow rate of conveying gas to compensate for increased load.

However rotary valve's working load was increased 2 years ago but this recent increase in failure frequency has only been observed by us for the last 2 months.

Please advice regarding the best adhesive you have found on PTFE Gland Packings.

What 1724 Chesterton do you use, the 1724E control valve kit or the 1724/324? The 1724E does not require any adhesives and the 1724/324 has protective lubricants. Chesterton guarantees for 1724/324 packing lifetime which exceeds the valve lifetime.

I have never heard of adhesives used on packing. If anything, they are lubricated.

We are using Chesterton 1724/324. Unfortunately I do not have a drawing with me at the moment to show you guys exactly where are we using the gland packing in the rotary valve.
But what I can assure you guys is that we do indeed need to fix gland packing rings on to seal cassettes before we can go on with the assembly.
