We have a gyratory crusher in our mine operation and a grizzly feeder is currently being used to feed the crusher with ore. There has been a lot of downtime caused by mechanical breakdown in the feeder and we would like to take it out of the system.

We would like to consider other cost effective methods that are used to feed such kind of a crusher.

Thanks in advance for your advices.

What have been the problems with the feeder? What is your required capacity?

Thanks for responding Mike.

The main problem with the feeder (Humboldt feeder) is that there has been frequent build-up of ore between the section bars (preventing scalping of ore) and steel plates were put above the bars as an effort to eliminate the problem.

This means that all the ore that comes from the mine is not scalped before it gets into the crusher and because of this, the grizzly feeder overfeeds the crusher with fine material drastically reducing its crushing efficiency.

Also, the steel plates that have been installed are affixed by bolting and welding at some areas. The bolts loosen and the welding breaks due to the feeders vibrations. The plates then get into the crusher with the feed and result in chokes that can take up-to 8 to 12 hours a day.

The optimal crushing rate is 900tph but we are currently at about 500tph.

If you have modified the feeder without the manufacturers assistance you may have reduced it's effectiveness. These types of feeders are tuned to the weight of the tray and base. Adding weight to the tray with the steel plates can cause yourself more problems.

Often a large magnet is placed just before the crusher to remove steel tramp materials to prevent jamming.
