Respected Members,

I would like to know the best practices of metering a water softener and widening capacity of brine tank. Our requirement of water is throughout the day and is about 2,00,000 liters. Timer may not workout since because of the arbitrary usage of water quantities in a typical day. So then if the other method is adopted that is metering the usage through flow meter, say after 2,00,000 liters, starts regeneration. One more thing is would like to fill the salt not every single day but may be for 3-4 days (our chosen resin tank capacity is 1200x2, which need to be regenerated for every day for 200 KL ). Vendor says then resin tank capacity need to be increased if brine tank capacity is increased. Some inputs please how to have a bigger brine tank for our resin capacity. So that every day filling brine tank is not required and can be done once in 3-4 days.
Thanks

Request the Vendor to size the brine tank with a salt storage capacity that will last 3-4 days.

Dear Sirs,

My doubt is will not more salt is added to resin tanks since brine tank capacity is more than (4 days capacity) what is required for one regeneration (every day) ?

Softeners are typically operated with a set lbs salt/cu ft of resin for regeneration. The models I deal with are usually in the range of 6-15 lb salt/cu ft. There will be more solid salt in the tank than what is dissolved. When the brine is discharged to the resin tank, fresh water is introduced and dissolves more salt until there is no more salt to be dissolved. Then new salt has to be added.

Your brine tank can only hold so much salt/water so you will be limited. If you want to have a longer duration between refilling the salt, you need a bigger brine tank.

Agree with PEDARRIN2. The amount of salt storage is independent of the brine dosage since the length of the brine cycle is typically regulated by a timer of some sort.

Thanks for the replies. Want to be aware of these facts since our maintenance staff may forget to refill salt every day if they are busy.
I do have another query. Our multi port valve is meter based. For some reasons i want to enforce time restrictions also so the water no need to be softened and avoids the softener in these times. What can be the best practice ?
