Hello fellow engineers,

I need to design for an ongoing project a block thrust for a tee (steel). The problem is I don't have enough space for a classic concrete block thrust, so I need to design some kind of special block thrust (like a pulling one or made of reinforced concrete or an I beam).

Please find attached a little sketch.

Thank you in advance.

Is the clearance to some immoveable object, where you can just pour concrete between it and the tee?
Otherwise, you can use restrained joints on the branch line, I believe you can restrain the joints for X number of feet back- I think this is covered in the ductile-iron standards, not sure.

POLYENGMOR ,

Will you provide more info ( joint type, soil conditions, depth of pipe, a cross section sketch ..). Is 500 Tons of branch load due to hydrostatic test ? A simple calc. Abranch =7855 cm2

and the pressure P = 500000/7855 = 63 bars ??

Note that if the pipe is welded or otherwise restrained, you wouldn't get a pressure component of thrust, just that due to momentum change going through the fitting.

A thrust block for a 1 meter diameter pipe is going to be ridiculously huge. The thrust from that is probably like... more than 100,000 lbs I think.

Instead of doing a thrust block, why not just use a mechanical joint such as a 1100 MEGALUG® Mechanical Joint Restraint?

Thank you everyone for your answers.

@JStephen: The clearance is due to upcoming works on the other side of the branch, the block thrust is temporary. Restrained joints are not available at the moment.

@HTURKAK: I made a mistake calculating the branch load, the test pressure is 30 bars, then the load is 236 Tons. The pipes are not buried currently (ongoing works). Please find attached a more detailed sketch.

The second picture that you have posted also does not give necessary info . for a valid , valuable comment . Are these temporary supports saddle or sleepers ? Is the branch line has any bend etc. ? so the subject load 236 Tons will cancel.. If the test portion including the branch Tee has a blind flange , the subject force again will cancel each other etc..

Pls provide more data to get better responds..

If you really want to do this then I think you're going to need steel piles.

But it is not the way to do it. You need to get axial connection from the branch pipe.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.
