Bolt On Reinforcing - Built-Up Steel Members

Does anyone know if extensive load testing as been done on steel members that have been reinforced by bolting on reinforcing?

I am looking for actual testing reports & documentation that shows bolting on reinforcing works or doesn't work. Bolting on steel to existing steel members to build up a stronger section is becoming more common.

I would really appreciate it if anyone who has documentation on this..

It can work just fine if the design is done properly. It is usually an exercise in determining shear flow and then appropriately distributing the load to the fasteners...otherwise the first fastener gets overloaded and you progressive failure.

I'm looking for actual documentation that shows this. Hopefully there is supporting lab tests that have been done.

Don't know of any - but I am sure some university profs or PHD candidates have done a lot of it. Google it.

You should try AISC. I recall reading journal papers by Lambert Tall about reinforcing steel columns. They may have papers on other types of members.

As far as reinforcing a member, as Ron said it's done all the time. How much additional capacity you get is based on how much dead load you relieve prior to the repair.
