Bolt Tension Standard 1

Hi all,

I have a question for bolt tensioning and preload required for bolt connection.
how can we determine preload for bolt connection? i.e. we use ASTM A193 Grade B7 stud bolt for flange connection.
I thought the bolt must be tensioned to 70% its yield strength (as i read in many blogs), but is there any standard that mention the required preload (stress) of the bolt?

I'd recommend reviewing ASME PCC-1.

While a lot of folks specify some % of yield across the board (50% being pretty common), that won't necessarily be the right number for all joints.

Your question and answer are both contained in this sentence.

70% of yield strength is a level of preload.

Whether or not that is appropriate for the joint you're designing, is up to you.
