In AISC's manual in Section J3.10(c) it's written "For connections made using bolts that pass completely through an unstiffened box member or HSS, see Section J7 and Equation J7-1"

Equation J7-1: Rn=1.8*Fy*Apb
where Apb=projected bearing area

I cant find how to calculate this "projected bearing area". Anybody knows?

gehe,

Try the following link. If it doesn't work, then try to copy and past it into your web browser.

The book is titled: Lui, E.M.“Structural Steel Design” Structural EngineeringHandbook Ed. Chen Wai-Fah Boca Raton: CRC Press LLC,1999

Scroll down to Section 3.3.3 Pin-connected members. There it states Apb, projected bearing area, is equal to d x t. Where d = the pin diameter and t = the plate thickness.

Hope this helps.

Isn't the projected bearing area the bolt diameter times the material thickness? That's how you do it for bolt bearing on angles or WF webs.
