Bolted Steel Connections

Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

I am designing a steel portal frame canopy i.e. moment frame with a 15 degree rafter slope.

The column / rafter connection is to be a bolted haunch (tapered member).

I am looking for design guidlines for the column / rafter and connection design in AISC but havent come across any.

Any pointers will be appreciated

I'm new to the AISC method of design so please bear with me.
I have the following AISC documents ; a) Steel Construction Manual 13th Edition, b)Standard Code of Practice 2005 and c)Design Examples version 13.
Is the Design Guide something different?

Design Guides are additional design references provided by AISC. They are available for free to AISC members on their website. They can be downloaded individually for a price.

I'm pretty sure there is not an AISC design guide specifically for portal frames. The design guides do have some info that may help you with bolted moment connections - although if you have the 13th edition manual you have most of what you need, don't spend your money on the design guide unless you are it contains something useful for your problem.

Hi again everyone,

Here in England (uk) steel portal frames for industrial sheds are very common. I get the feeling that bolted and haunched knee joints are not how it's done in the USA. If not do you use fabricated welded plates for these joints or something else.

Design Guides 4 and 16 are not specifically for portal frames. They are for the design of end plate moment connections.

BS - Haunched bolted knee joints are done here, I've never done it but I see them fairly often. Connectegr is right, if you look at design guide 16 it covers end plate moment connections which is what you need. I just skimmed through it and chapter 5 of the design guide is 'Gable Frame Panel Zone Design' and it looks like that's what you are looking for.

AISC Design Guide 25 when it comes out will cover tapered member design. It has been caught up in the editorial process for the last couple of years but is very close to completion at the moment.
What you have described is a fairly typical metal building frame configuration.
