Hi,

A contractor has proposed propping above a first floor bay window from the outside whilst the bay window is replaced. The floors cannot be propped internally so he’s suggested bolting two Acrow props together, one on top of the other, in order to reach 5.2m height (size 4 Acrow extends only to 4.8m). Seems unlikely to be secure, is this typically ever done? If not, would appreciate possible solutions that I can discuss with them.

Thanks

ceinostuv,

Maybe I've misunderstood your second paragraph, which mentions scaffold and shoring, I shall apologize for my mistake. But, even with the permission of the manufacture, until seeing the detail, I would still second guess the applicability for this project. I think you would agree too.

OSHA (in the US) has investigated several collapses due to such post-shore stacking - typically the result of contractors not following the manufacturer's written instructions based upon testing data.

How about two medium props then bolt / screw bolt them into a large piece of timber then bolt the next one(s) on to of that piece of timber?

I think though until you actually draw this up and work out a way to avoid any moment forces on the prop, you're doomed to failure.

Those strong boy type supports impose a bending moment on the prop which is ok for a single one, but your joint is your weak point. Hence why welding them together might work, but small / uneven bolting won't.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.
