Trying to create a BOM template........figured most of it out.........couple things? First, how do you hide columns? We are putting some properties in the BOM for another program, but dont want to see the columns on the drawing. 2nd? I have a column (the parts number column that came in one of the standard templates) that i try deleting. I delete the column, save the template. But when I bring it back up, it shows up again

Excel or SW BOM?

Check you Tools > Options > System Options > File Locations to see where the BOM Templates link is pointing, and make sure the new BOM is saved in that place.

SW's BOM..........yep its going to the template I created

Well, I have no problem deleting a column & creating a new template. If you are absolutely sure you are calling up the modified & newly created BOM, then I have no idea why it is not working for you. Try Alternative to try before reinstalling faq559-507

As for hiding a SW BOM column, I don't think you can.

Thanks CorBlimey.......so anyone else have thoughts on hiding a SW BOM column? Ive never used the Excel based BOM. When creatinga template for an Excel based BOM, can you hide columns?

Sure, you can hide a column in a SW BOM. Click on the BOM in the graphics area, then click the "BOM Contents" button in the Property Manager. Click on the column headings you want to hide. The column will turn gray and will not display in the BOM. If you then save the BOM with hidden columns as a BOM template then when you use the template the columns will be hidden.

Also, some columns are required and can't be deleted. You can still hide them, though.

handleman ... I cannot do that in SW05. Is that new to SW06?

Now that you mention it, I believe that was new with '06. Sorry!

I think it's a bad idea to delete the part number column. Try to hide it if you don't need it. You can delete any other columns at will.

g60dude ... regarding the Excel BOMs, anything that you can do with a normal Excel spreadsheet you can do with the Excel BOM.

I think it is important to keep in mind that if you hide columns within the SW BOM, the (hidden)columns are not written out to the external file when you save the BOM itself as a text file, or CSV file. This may impact your next step in the process (thinking of your reference to the "other program").

Just something to consider...

Keep in mind gnetlemen that you can easily creat different BOM's for different drawings or uses. In the part's property file info, you can add dozens of different pieces of info and only reference what you want to on the specific BOM. On some part files, we have info for suppliers, weight, material, PN, etc. etc. and on one BOM we only have three things. On the accounting BOM we have suppliers info, PN, CAGE code, and drawing number with dash number. The BOM doesn't necesarily have to have every bit of info you have listed on the individual part file property.
