Bone resection in knee arthroplasty

Dear all,

I am studying the knee joint prosthesis design. I have a medical problem with distal femur and proximal tibia resection. As we know the bone must be cut for arthroplasty. I need the medical information about the allowable size of bone resection. I hope someone here can help me to recommend some papers for the problem.

Hi Usman,

Generally speaking, the distal femoral resection ranges from 6mm to 10mm (8 +/-2mm) which is based on the thickness of femoral implant at the distal location. As for proximal tibia, it can be anything from 2mm (from the deepest condyle) to 9mm (from the most prominent portion of shallowest condyle).

Again, these number differ from case to case based on actual patient's bone condition. As far as values for knee joint prosthesis is concerned, there resection thickness would be a good starting point for your study.

It would be best to talk to a hip orthopaedic surgeon but that is hard. An excellent (or, perhaps even better) alternative is to visit a library and review a comprehensive text by an expert hip orthopaedist. Yet another alternative is to google such procedures (and view a video or two on such procedures). Papers may not be your best choice when getting started.
