I have been asked a couple of questions about boxcar units, and I was hoping that someone could shed a little light on them for me. I know that they are indoor, packaged units, usually with DX cooling. Can they be water or air cooled? Do they incorporate outdoor air or do you have to duct OA into the return duct? With a packaged unit like this, can you add a vfd to the fan or is it usually included in the unit?

I assume that you mean rail boxcar units. See for more information.
These units have always been air-cooled as far as I know. Trying to get a water source while moving would be difficult. Since it is a refrigerated space they do not use OA because there is no ventilation requirement. I haven't seen a VFD on these units but you could probably modify one but the temperature control is usually on/off. If you want to modify it for a different application I would look at the units they use for mobile offices and prefab schools.
