secretsix,

If a lathe cuts a taper on a long cut like yours, the first place I'd look would be to check the tailstock.
Most lathes have an adjustment to move the tailstock perpendicular to the ways. If the tailstock is off center, the lathe will cut a taper. Run the tailstock up close to the headstock and see if you can measure any offset.

ive put two new sharp dead centres 1 in the tail stock an 1 in the headstock an adusted the tail stock for centre its about 0.3 mm higher than the head stock will that have any affect on it an how do i solve it do i shim the headstock up to the tailstock???

The tailstock, also check they line up front to back.

Before any adjusting make sure you indicate the center in the head stock. It has to be "0.0000".

If you are using three jaw chuck make sure its not worn and clamping off center.

Another geometry to check is twist in the bed ways (from head to tail stock). This is common and will cause taper. This problem is especially problematic with very old lathes.

ive got a clock coming in the post i'll get back when ive checked every thing
