I have a socket welded flange that will have a pipe welded to it. Which do I use for the flange calc, loose or integral type flange?

Figure 2-4.
Loose type flanges are attached by fillet welds.
Integral flanges have FJP groove welds.
Optional flanges have PJP groove welds.

ConstantEffort,
Based on my research I think you may have confused the terminology of the weld types
PJP = Partial Joint Penetration,

The other joint type is CJP Complete Joint Penetration (not FJP, Full Joint Penetration)

From: The Complete Joint Penetration (CJP) groove weld is a groove weld that extends completely through the thickness of components joined. The primary purpose for the use of the CJP groove welds is to transmit the full load-carrying capacity of the structural components they join.

The Partial Joint Penetration (PJP) groove weld is a groove weld that does not extend completely through the thickness of components joined. Effective throat of a weld is the shortest distance from the joint root to its surface.

prognosis: Lead or Lag

You're right, pennpiper, and thank you for correcting it before I confused anyone else!

I "comangled" my colloquial and formal terms. Partial Pen converts quite nicely to PJP. Full Pen became FJP in my mind, but it is indeed CJP.

kpl012, sure if needs a calc? Is it a B16.5 or custom?

Regards,

Mike

kpl012, under Sec VIII, Div 1, B16.5 & B16.47 flanges are useable at the T/P ratings from their own specs. See UG-44, no calc needed.

You will find that B16.5 flanges often do not make under Apx 2.

Mike

You are so correct SnTMan. It doesn't satisfy Apx 2 after going thru that long calc. Guess that will remain a mystery forever. Thanks for every ones help.

kpl012, no mystery, different design rationales. Been discussed numerous times, try a site serch.

Regards,

Mike
