Brake linings on hoists

Does anyone know of any refernces for monitoring brake lining temperature on hoists? We've been asked to provide constant monitoring since the hoists run from a remote location- we had one instance where a small piece of brake lining became wedged between lining & brake path- created a small fire- now we have to monitor 24 hrs a day- we're thinking infrared?
