I posted this in another forum but maybe you guys can help- I 've been asked to find a way to monitor temperatures on brake linings- I see there's been work done on tractor/trailer brake/wheel systems but are there commercial systems out there ?- my application is somewhat different- the system is parallel posts, and the linings are 18" wide x 1" thick x 8' long ( its for a mine winder- thought I might be able to adapt something) - problem originated when a small piece of lining broke off, became wedged between lining & brake path & started a small fire- we run the winder remotely & would take 20 mins to get to the winder - we are installing fire suppression but also need temp detection
Thanks

Not my area, but I imagine you could use an infared thermometer to measure the outside surface of the drum.

I think that an interface could be set up with a computer that would record these temperatures in real time.

With experimentation, you could determine the maximum rate of temperature increase, then create a program so that if this rate was exceeded, an alarm or corrective action was implemented. As I say, just random thoughts as this is definitely not my area of expertise.

You could drill into the edge of the lining(s) and insert thermocouples. You could run the thermocouple output to a furnace controller and set it up to sound an audible alarm if the temperature set point was exceeded.

Thanks for the suggestions - I was thinking of thermocouples also- apparently a company similar to ours was doing the IR thing but had some problems and have removed their system- will try and find out why from them

Thanks

Is there a thermal tape product that could output a resistance to an alarm? You could stick it on there and monitor the whole lining. I would think if you are remote monitoring you need something of low power consumption.
