I am new to this forum, please forgive me if my format is wrong.
I am hoping someone can tell me if there are any regulations in existence for approval of pressure vessels for use within Brasil. I have read Brazilian NR13 "Boilers and Pressure Vessels" but find it more along the lines of installation, ongoing inspection requirements. Unless I am missing something I can not find anywhere within the regulation what approvals need to be obtained for design, inspection during design, testing and certification for new equipment, in my case a Cryogenic tank. I also am unsure if ASME Sect VIII div 1, "U" stamped vessels are my best chance of avoiding any rejection by the authorities?
I,m looking for the protocol to get vessel designs approved. If anyone can tell me I would be very grateful.

Hi SMcI,

In Brazil there are not any codes or standards that are mandatory for pressure vessels, they do have to comply with NR13 but it is mostly about documentation, and some inspection requirements.

Usually vessels are designed based on codes like ASME BPVC, EN 13445, PD 5500, AD Merkblatt, etc.

So to answer your question, you only need Stamps if specifically required by the customer. Legally speaking, the only documents you are gonna need are the ones which are mandatory per NR13 and the ART (Anotação de Responsabilidade Técnica) which is a legal document signed by the design engineer which is used to create a legal binding between the design engineer and the equipment. Another ART should also be created by the engineer who was responsible for the manufacture.

For cryogenic vessels, usually there are other specific standards and codes that are used that allows a thinner wall thickness due to the low temperature and the properties of austenitic steels.

I`m a brazilian and have worked with pressure vessels for some time within the local industry, including design of cryogenic static and also transportable vessels (mounted on trailers and trucks).

Thank you very much XL83NL and Victor. Both of your posts are a great help. I am very grateful.
If you could give me some advice on where to look to find the ART agreements I would also be grateful.
Thanks you.

You are not gonna find "ART agreemeents" anywhere. The ART is a document that a licensed engineer (in brazil they have to be members of a council called CREA to be licensed) creates where he states some parameters of the vessel and assumes responsability for its design, so it is a custom made document for each vessel.

Thank you very much victorpbr, I am very grateful for your advice. My next challenge is to find a licensed engineer..
Thank you.
