I make complicated multi-body parts in order to save out STLs for analysis. Sometimes there are a dozen parts imported and I do various combines and splits, I save out a volume and then roll back the model to work on the next volume. If I'm not careful I can get stuck on a circular reference and then if I have made a mistake and want to go back to the beginning some of the original geometry is consumed and I need to start all over. If I could sort out how to use the 'Save As with References' dialog and its options I think I could save myself a lot of time by making a copy without the entangling references. Can anyone point me to an easy to understand run-down on the subject or describe a step by step procedure for me?

I would use a different approch. See if this anwers you.

In my original file, from the solids folder, right click the reqd solid and select insert into new part. The selected solid is now there in the new part window. There is just only on feature on the FM. Right click this feature and select "list external refs". From the dialog, select break all.

Save as with references allows you to change the names of any/all components and where they're saved. If you highlight (shift select or ctrl select) parts in the 'Name' column, you can easily add a prefix or suffix via the options box. Doubling clicking on a name will allow you to change it.
Highlighting lines under the 'Folder' column will let you change where the files are be saved to. Just highlight then use the 'Browse' button.

Thanks to both of you, I'll experiment with the 'Save As with Refs' and with the 'Insert into new part' option. Looks good.
