Bridgeport Boss control upgrade

Hello,

We have a Bridgeport Series I CNC mill with the BOSS 5 control. We are thinking of upgrading the control to one of the replacements that are advertised. The reason we are thinking this way is the machine is very tight and takes up a small space in our prototype room.

We are also interested in the HAAS and FADAL tool room mills. We do not run production parts, small prototype runs only.

Any suggestions or comments from anyone who has done this upgrade would be very much appreciated.

Regards,
Will

I programmed the Boss 5 for several years back in the early eighties. The control actually had an amazing set of features when you consider the price and vintage.

cutter diameter compensation
looping with nesting
subroutines with variables and nesting
scaling
rotation
polar coordinates
helical interpolation
one-line 360 degree circles
several drilling canned cycles - better than Fanuc's in some ways
a counterbore cycle
other holemaking canned cycles
facing cycles

and more, the details of which I've forgotten.

Thanks for both posts.

We want to replace the control due to it becoming unstable and no support from Bridgeport---defunct.

I will check out the link moldcore suggested.
