Hi guys,

Just want to know what is the equivalent material of the following to US Standards (ASTM)

- BS 1506 630 790
- BS 970 080 M40
- *Stainless Steel - 1.4401 to EN 10088-3:1995
- *Carbon Steel galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461
- *Mild Steel - S275JO to EN 10025-1 and -2:2004 galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461

Am trying to convert datasheets from BS to US Standards. Also, can you further explain what the ones with asterisk meant in US standsrd? Seem to me like a range of possible materials.

Let me know if you have references as well that I could use in concern to this topic.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Virata

Get yourself a handbook on comparative standards for steels, which provides such equivalent conversions .

I once had to do a very similar project (Conversions from German to US steels). I find the Worldwide Guide to Equivalent Irons and Steels published by ASM International to be a very comprehensive and useful reference for this purpose.
We really cannot answer these questions in this forum because relationships to ASTM standards are not 1-to-1. The applicable ASTM spec will depend on issues including product form and specified properties. You really will have to do the legwork to get to the appropriate spec. The ASTM/SAE publication Metals and Alloys in the Unified Numbering System will be very helpful in figuring out the appropriate ASTM or other spec for the equivalent alloy you identified.

A couple of comments to help:

1.4401 is Type 316N stainless steel (UNS S31651)
S275JO is Type 1518 high-manganese carbon steel (UNS G15180)
ISO 1461 is really a galvanizing spec and does not refer to substrate requirements. You may want to peruse Volume 1.06 of the ASTM Specifications (Coated steel products) to identify the equivalent.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the feedbacks guys!

Appreciate it.
