I have seen a few discussions on these requirements in other forums. This particular post is an extension thread of closed thread: In an ongoing project we have faced this particular dilemma on structural steel material testing, for a site with design ambient temperature of -3 deg C. Four structural steel materials are being used: A36, A-992 (ASTM grades) as well as S275 & S355 (EN-10025 grades). We are considering closure of the technical concern by considering ASTM A36 & EN-10025 S275 being equivalent to ASTM A709/709M Grade 36, and further referral to AASHTO 2010 table 6 & Table 6.6.2-2 (Zone 1 notch testing requirements for A36 steel). The tables indicate that the testing specified in AISC 360 i.e. CVN test at 21deg C (27J) is adequate to cover the concern for this site.
It would be helpful to receive thoughts on this issue from this forum. Also, any reference of past experience on equivalence of A992/S355 to materials listed on AASHTO Table 6.6.2-2?
