broken view alignment impossible? 4

I am trying to make a drawing of a long part which is rectangular in cross section and has different features in different faces. Its actually sheet metal but I don't think that matters really.

I created a view of one face and placed a couple of breaks in it to make the drawing a sensible size.

Now I created a projected view from the first and the breaks are nicely reproduced. I have to move the breaks a bit in that one to see the relevant features. Now, oh dear, the ends of my part no longer line up.

It is actually impossible to ever make the ends of the part line up in the broken views ever again. There is no possibility of a relationship between the breaks in different views so the part looks different lengths in the different views - quite against common drawing convention and rather peculiar.

The only way is to try to carefully place the breaks in the first view so that everything necessary is visible in the other views that you can't see yet! (then be very careful never to accidentally move the breaks afterward - there is no way to lock their position either).

I've ended up telling my draughtsman to never use broken views, just make a small view and use detail views of it where necessary.

If I recall correctly you can do what you want but you will need to do all of your alignment prior to breaking the views, including aligning the break lines.

I'm not in a position where I can provide any further detail than this but I think you can get your drawing the way you want it without using detail views.

On the other hand, I could be all wet...

Well go tell your draughtsman to nevermind what you told them earlier and go ahead and use broken views because you found a way to keep the breaks aligned with the parent.

Go to the child broken view and on the bottom of the "Drawing View" in the task pane pick the "More Properties" button at the very bottom. The "Drawing View Properties" dialog box pops up. On the bottom right-hand side, put a check in the check-box for "Align breaks with parent".

Now if you move the breaks on the parent view, the projected views will update accordingly.

In SW2009, dimensions can be added to the breaks (from the ends) to maintain alignment. The dimensions will automatically hide themselves after being placed.

WOW, we have been having the same issue for years now. our CAD guys will be very happy to hear the news!

thanks SMcadman.

I created a child broken view and checked the property as you said.
Unfortunately there seems to be a bug, (SW2008 sp5), when I dag the breaks in theparent view the zig-zag cut lines in the child view follow, but then become infinitely long. They then don't print out (but are always ther on the screen). Annoying!

I recently switched to a certified graphics card to avoid this sort of problem.

...ah well maybe my swiss and german coleagues will soon roll out 2009... :(

You can create multiple copied or projected views and then use crop to break into portions you want to show in broken view.

Moyesboy, I get the same problem in SW09. You have to un-break the child view and break it again, but I agree it is very annoying.
