Dear All

I would like to install some light fittings in zone B of a swimming pool installation. They are however, IPX3.
In Reg. 602-05-01 Degree of protection of enclosures, zone B enclosures should be IPX4 minumum. But am I right in thinking that as long as my luminaires (not enclosures) are SELV as per 602-04-01, I'll be complying with the regs.??

Any help gratefully received.....

fb,

I believe these are two separate requirements of the regulations. IP ratings are for ingress protection whereas SELV is the method required for protection against electric shock, therefore you must comply with both. Also the degree of protection required (IPX4) protects against water splashing from any direction. IPX3, however, only protects against water at 60 degrees on either side of the vertical. It is clear from the zone B diagram that it would be easy for water to make contact with the luminaire at any angle hence the IPX4 requirement.
Probably not what you wanted to hear - sorry!

Thanks sfb for your reply, I can see how you are approaching this one, but I also looked at 602-03-01 and deduced that because the luminaires are specifically SELV then IP2X would suffice. I may have to approach the IEE on this one for clarification. What thinkest thou....
Thanks again.

sfd, I clarified the situation this morning with the IEE. The minimum requirement is IP24 for luminaires in Zone B. IP2X is for accessability to live conductors, SELV is required in Zone B and IPX4 minimum for protection against water ingress. Yes you were right, I did not want this answer. Anyway the situation is now clear. Happy days....:->
