hello guys

am learning more on welding standards /specs. I have some question's if you have the time to help and explain the questions that am asking please. as I say am learning and trying to under stand more

question one- if one welder takes a test (PQR) 15614- and passes and if a second welder takes the same test will the second welder's standard come under 9606

question two- passing a test on plate to plate does that cover a welder to weld box section to box section because plate will cover pipe in position over 500mm dia

question three- is it possible to take a test to 9606 standard only or does 15614 have to be achieved first before taking 9606

(1) is the test a welder performance qualification, then it must be done according to 9606-1. If the test is to qualify a pWPS, then you need to follow the 15614-1.
If a welder welds a piece in order to qualify a pWPS and additional details have been taken care of, he can qualify the pWPS (so obtaining a WPQR according to 15614-1) AND he gets a 9606-1 WPQ.

(2) Depends what you call a box section. This is a tricky one, because square or rectangular sections are commonly seen as (round) pipes with diameter = the smallest dimension of the SHS.
Buy yes, generally a FW (plate/plate fillet weld) will cover welding box sections, because these are essentially plate to plate fillet welds.

(3) Both can be done independently. There is no order. No relationship between both as you mean in this context.
There is however a need to have a (p)WPS for both, but a pWPS is accepted for a WPQ.
