Hello

I am wanting to assess a concentrated load on a two-way spanning slab (1.5m x 3.0m) supported on four-sides. The load (75kN on a 300x300mm pad) will be 150-mm away from any bearing.

To assess the effective-width of the load-spread beneath the concentrated-load; BS8110 refers me to clause 3.5.2.2 (see attached).

The clause states the slab should be simply supported on two opposite edges and the load to be linear with the span; and then continues with two sub-clauses 'a' and 'b'. I have a two-way slab and there is no reference to two-way slabs in the clause although 'b' does describe the situation for a two-way slab.

Would I be correct in assuming that 'b' is a specific reference to the assessment of the effective-width for a two-way slab?

if so, 'b' refers to the ratio of the stiffnesses and gives a minimum value of 4(fx). In 'a' the width is 2.4(fx). 4 is larger than 2.4 but 'b' states that a smaller value than 2.4(fx) should be used. is this an error, please?

I am desperate to sort this out and I cannot find any references.

Regards
