BSPP Fitting Questions

Greetings,

I have never used anything that has a BSPP fitting until now. The Festco cylinder I'm sourcing has G1/4 ports. Due to radial constraints I need to install an elbow right at the cylinder port. I am having a heck of a time finding G elbows here in the US. Anyone know any good sources for a vendor that carries G elbows? Ideally, I would like an elbow with a G 1/4 male and 1/8 NPT female.

The next question is regarding tightening. With NPT fittings we can always tighten them in a desired direction due to the tapered shape. The BSPP fittings have some kind of fancy crush seal. Can these fittings also be turned to a desired direction while tightening. I see that some of the BSPP fittings have a swivel feature but not all.

Select a material, and call your local Swagelok distributor.

Order also a tube of Loctite Pipe Sealant with Teflon; works great with BSPP.

Thanks for the response but I looked at Swagelok but didn't find anything. Swagelok is always one of the places I check.

Can the fittings be rotated to align them in a desired direction? I'm not sure how much the sealing washers can crush.

Swagelok's catalog page says call if you don't see what you want, because they have other stuff that's not in the catalog. I think they're also tooled up to make specials at reasonable cost.

With the Loctite, you don't need the nut/washer; just point the fitting where it needs to be and leave it alone for a while.

BSPT is like NPT. tighten to anywhere, but use sealant to fight leaks.

BSPP I have limited experience, but the elbows I have used had jam nuts for alignment like SAE oring fittings.
I have seen solid metal crush washers, metal with rubber ID crush washers, and rings with loose orings inside. sort of like DIN fittings.

Hello,

BSPP fittings either seal on the cone (male BSP into female BSP) or with a dowty seal, which is a washer with a rubber type seal. if you want to orient the elbow, you could use a male to male BSP adapter, followed by a female to male elbow (the female swivel allows you to orient the elbow as required)

Just screw a tapered fitting into the port and apply liquid or tape sealant. Then you can position/orientate the fitting to wherever you like.

You can also use NPT fittings on BSP thread...if you are desperate. BSP and NPT pitch is the same, just a different flank angle on the threads.

Festo themselves do fittings with a PTFE seal embedded in the thread, just for this sort of application. You did mean Festo where you put Festco at the top right..?

NPT and BSPT are slightly different. 55 vs 60 degrees, rounded or flat or truncated tops, and very slight pitch differences. I do remember smaller ones at 11 TPI vs. 11-1/2 TPI for example.

They will screw into mismatched ports though.
