Building Above Ground

Our manufacturing facility is in an old roofing tile manufacturing facility, originally built around the 1890's. The entire property is riddled with brick lined tunnels. We are interested in adding a free standing metal building appxly 50' x 100' x 16' eaves. Current building design calls for concrete column footings buried 3'-5' deep. This would require a caving in and compacting procedure that would be quite expensive. Does any one know if such a building can be built entirely above ground? All ideas, comments, and suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, K.

Anything is possible with enough money. The trade off is that you will need large footings to:
- spread out the load of the roof and structure on the ground
- keep the columns in alignment
- prevent the building from blowing away in the wind

My guess is that you will spend more money on concrete than you would gettings the footings put in.
