Dear All,

Would like to request for some assistance. I have a piping system consisting of a 3/4" pipe sch 160 SA 106 GrB. The service is acetylene and this can be considered as non toxic.

Using ASME B31.3,

1) Can I assume this piping belongs to the category of High Pressure Fluid Service ?

2)How do I demonstrate the bursting strength of this pipe?

Thank you.

Hi,
1) Do you have a design pressure? SCH160 is heavy wall so I guess so.

2) Here I think you mean the burst pressure. Demonstrate means destructive testing.

If you want to show it by means of calculation I would say:
Use the Wall Thickness calculation formula for straight pipe. In stead of the design stress S from table A-1, you should take the SMYS out of table A-1.
Fill in the wall thickness of SCH160 from which the Corrosion Allowance and mill tolerance should be deducted, and calculate back to the pressure.

Is it an existing system? Than use the measured wall thickness.

Regards.

FKE,

First of all thanks you for your response.

1) Design pressure is 519 bar

2)Yes, actually burst pressure is what i should be calculating and yes, demonstrate is a poor choice of word. Calculate woud have been a better one.

However, in calculating the burst pressure and assuming that SMYS that you mentioned means Specified min yield strength, do you think using the tensile strength (SMTS) would be more appropriate for this calculation?

Hi mrpv,

Thank you!
Your statement of using SMTS is correct! You should indeed use the actual tensile strength.

Sorry, I mixed up the S in the formula for the w.t. calc which is most of the times the parameter for the design stress determination.

Regards.

I've performed burst tests on 3/4" standard wall continuous butt welded API 5LA pipe. Burst pressure was greater than 15,000 psig.
