Would someone please direct me to a source that will guide me though designing a bushing/journal running surface for a shaft using 100 viscosity grease type lube?

I'm new at bushing design, and know only basic principles and rules of thumb.

The design needs to take into account:
- high operating temps
- high moisture environment (saturated steam)
- alternating cooling and reheating scenario (5x daily)
- heavy loading
- max 10 mph rolling velocity (9 1/2" pitch dia wheel velocity)

Appreciate you help! ... Chris H. (caduser@jameshardie.com)

They have plain bearing product operating succesfully for years in steam condensate at 120 deg C and also 200 deg C

Try to find the film strength of the grease at the maximum temperature. Then make a diameter and length of bushing so the projected area is large enough that sitting under maximum load will not wipe or push the grease off the pin. At ambient temperatures 6,000 psi seems to work well. Just make sure the pin is large enough in diameter that it does not bend and cause point loading. The temperature change may cause clearance changes because of different coefficient of expansions of the materials.

Perhaps you can have the whole assembly custom/special made at a roller manufacturer such as:

Roller manufacturers are accustomed to meeting special design requirements on a daily basis, plus there is the added benifit of a warrenty, usually.

Good Luck.
