Hi there,
I have a simple general question. When we construct plants and we are nearing completion, we generate a "but list". People ask me why it is called that and I cannot answer them. Is it perhaps a that everthing is complete "but" the following items? Perhaps someone has a bit of history behind the naming convention?

Alwynb, We always called it a "Punch List". When the job was done it was punched out. If not, then you made a trip to the field foreman and "punched" him.

i think the general term is "punch list" which we prepare before and during commissioning period. I like the definition of punch list though.

Sometimes, it is called exception items list. These exception items would fall under two classes;

1. Items that would impact plant commissioing therefore must be completed prior to start up, such as rotating equipment, instrumentation, etc. These normally require more attention.
2. Items required but not necessary for start up; non critical piping insulations, painting, etc.
