I have been looking through various posts and threads (similar to the one referenced above),on a lot of sites, looking for a technical definition of the difference between a full strength butt weld, and a full penetration butt weld.
To me it appears that where you were educated globally influences how you interpret these two terms.

Can any one assist with a link or a reference?

I think they are generally the same thing, except for example, where welding 700gr material the engineer has the option of using non matching strength consumables; therefore the joint will be full penetration but not full strength.( AS1554.4 clause 4.6.1.2)
This is a common case with a lot of the Australian defence vehicles, the weld is designed as the weakest point.

But for use as a weld symbol or methodology explaination on matching steel grades using a matching consumable - I reckon that draftsman or engineer uses whichever he pleases.

saruncivil,
Sorry but do not agree with your interpretation at all.
What you have drawn as a FSBW could quite possibly be a partial penetration groove weld (based on the process)which is definitely not full strength.

DD

WeldQA,
Have come across it before a few times working in Australia and have just presumed it is a draftsman/detailer who doesn't know what he is talking about.
If it is not an FSBW ( Full Strength Butt Weld) what is it ? - an HSBW (Half Strength Butt Weld) or NQFSBW (Not Quite Full Strength Butt Weld).
It is the same as the problems experienced with different requirements of welding codes in different countries for fabricating / welding exactly the same thing.
IMHO there should be only two types of joints nominated - CJP (Complete Joint Penetration)or PJP (Partial Joint Penetration)- pretty easy for the welder to understand.
Cheers,
DD

Thanks DekDee,
I agree completely when it is two materials of the same thickness.
Since posting the thread I have been in a "to and fro" with the design engineer asking for him to do exactly that.

Dear DekDee,

Ya your comment was right, as u said there are no standards mentioned as FSBW. In our firm for full depth partial penetration butt weld (PPBW or PJP) is named as Full strength butt weld (FSBW), because for 20mm thick plate if we provide 20mm PPBW. The detailers are getting confused for PPBW why full bevel so and so and fabricator also, so avoiding this situation and miss communication. It was named as FSBW.

If we go for FPBW means UV rays test should be carried out it consumes more time in fabrication so depend on the member forces weld will given.

Thanks
