Hi

I have question about butterfly valve
is there any spec or standard or etc for Direction of this valve
i know when butterfly valve with lever closed lever angle between pipe and lever equal 90 degree but now assume pipe is horizontal and the direction of fluid is from west to east In other words coordinate of north in pipe is constant when i want to open the valve we have two choice to installation of valve one i rotate lever to east to open the valve two i installation of valve In a way that i should rotate lever to west to open the valve which one is correct when my direction of fluid from west to east do you know any standard for this

Thanks a lot

If there is a particular direction that allows the valve to operate the best there will be a marking on the valve showing the flow direction.

When you select a valve you can post the datasheet or photographs if you still have a question about installation orientation.

Thanks for attention but i want to know is it any reference Doc and how to rotate the lever of valve ?

As 3DDave said, you need to check the literature for the specific product. I doubt that there's a general document available that covers all valves.

You SHOULD install the valve so that the lever is parallel to the pipe when the valve is open. It does not matter if this is up, down, left, right, with flow, or against flow. I'm sure a code will spell this out somewhere but I promise you'll have incidents if you don't do this.

Can you draw this please. I've never seen directions in Compass before and it's confused me....

I agree with Tug about handle direction. It's the same with any quarter turn valve.

Many valves have a preferred flow direction.

thanks for your attention
in my scenario that explain above I must rotate lever to west or east ?

Rubber seated butterfly valves can be operated in either direction. The same is not true for metallic seated valves.

go and turn it by hand and eye ball it.
it should have a direction arrow on it.

butterfly valve is a quarter-turn valve that uses a disc-like mechanism to control the flow of fluid by rotating 90 degrees to open or close, essentially acting like a butterfly's wings, where the disc is positioned parallel to the flow when open and perpendicular to the flow when closed; it's often used for large diameter pipes and is known for its compact design and quick operation.

Key points about butterfly valves:
  • Mechanism:
A circular disc attached to a stem rotates within the valve body to regulate flow.

  • Quarter-turn operation:
Requires only a 90-degree rotation to fully open or close.

  • Applications:
Commonly used in water treatment, HVAC systems, chemical processing, and large-diameter pipelines due to its size and ease of operation.

  • Types:
Wafer style (clamped between flanges), lug style (with threaded lugs for bolting).
