Butterfly valves with electrical actuator

Dear all ,

The technical specifications in my water project call for butterfly valves operating with manual hand wheel actuators, BUT valves shall have provision for electrical actuators . my concern is about the provision for electrical actuators ???? I need to know if all butterfly valves can be connected to electricl actuator or this is something optional and we need to ask the manufacturer for ,so as to manufacture the valve to match and to be compatible with electrical actuators ?

Any inputs regarding the future connection with electrical actuators and what things I should take care about and consider them , will be highly appreciated ?

Most brand off butterfly valve can be adapted to have actuators Pneumatic/Electric or Hydraulic. Check what standard are used for the Valves mounting Flange arrangement and Shaft Dimensions and if your brand of actuator conforms to the same Standard then is should b e straight foreward if not an adaptor kit will be requited .Electric actuator can be purchased complete with Manual Over ride gearboxes. So the should really not be a problem Speak to your Valve and Actuator suppliers they should be able to guide you.

Preggys answer is OK as long as you do not have to bind yourself economically or technically to what actuators added and mounted to the valves will actually cost, or bind yourself any description or limitations on what type of electrical actuators are to be used or interfacing cost or guarantee.

Be careful here. If you get involved in theese questions, you will actually have to go 'the whole way' dimensioning and select the correct actuator for each single valve.

Electrical actuator selection is a case for electrical actuator experts and will involve among other things a full access of the electrical data and control schematic for the valves. This is very often not ready in the early stages of a water project, when the valves have to be selected.

Actuators will vary in price and size according to torque, closing time, current and voltage, extra possible gearing can size actuators up or down according to brand of actuator, mechanical detailed adaption to available mechanical interface on valve must be controlled - (often different adaption plates, or bosses must be detailed). In addition special details for electrical requirements may add to cost of the actuator, like position givers included etc.

Closing time requirement will vary according to waterhammer prevention, type of valve (on/off, regulating, pipebursting protection etc..)

Many more should have done like you, and asked some questions.

Also important: for water mains and electrical actuators note that double eccentric butterfly valves will give less torque requirement for same size compared to centric BFL.

Gear quality has a very wide range for both type of valves.

For selection and bidding both price/lifetime cost comparison should be an issue!

Lifetime expectance should be a part of the description both for valves, gears and actuators.

depending on the size of the valve and the gear box that is the manual operator it could be adapted in the field as an option. Several time we have adapted an electric actuaotr to the gear when the vale was very large in order to reduce the size of the electric actuator.

1) Please ask a new question rather than posting at the end of someone elses.

2) Your question is too broad. You need to refine it as to what you really need (there are a LOT of websites out there). The material chosen for a valve depends on a large number of factors and you haven't provided any information to help anyone help you.

3) What steps have you taken to find the information yourself? (i.e., did you try a web search engine)?
