Looking for good primer, reference and/or design specification on Buttress Threads as might be used in Poly Drum design. Specfically, Buttress Thread (US) - 63mm. Thanks!

API Specification 5CT, API Specification 5B Section 2 and the Machinist Handbook come to mind.

Does API 5B cover metric sizes? I have ANSI B1.9 - 1973, however that is inches only.

Wow....no, I have this in imperial.

Curious you mention this, Canada is metric but the influence in oil from our American partners typically classifies threads in imperial, volumes in either imperial/metric but weights, lengths as metric. So oil field threading is basically API, imperial.

I have some API specifications that are listed as metric units, Buttress included. This was obained as a photocopy out of the University of Alberta technical library, reference section.

What specifically are you looking for? Maybe I got it!

I am trying to identify the thread form that is used on a 55 gallon (U.S. manufactured) poly drum. One bung has 2" NPT and the other has a 63mm Buttress thread. I normally deal with aerospace standards, so this one was new to me. The thread looks to be a 7 deg/45 deg form, but definitely 63mm major diameter. References that I have looked through are Mark's, Std Handbook of Machine Design, ANSI B1.9, FED-STD-H28/14, and general query on IHS. I am guessing this might be an ISO standard... but can't seem to nail it down. After 20+ years.. still learning. Guess that is a good thing. My next stop is to call the drum manufacturer if I can get through. Thanks for your help.

Thought about that... this is definitely a 63mm major diameter thread.
