How do you determine the values to use for bypassing capacitors needed for power supplies? Where could I find such information?

Thank you in advance.

An old rule of thumb was 1000 uF per 1 amp....

But it really depends upon your allowed ripple voltage and ripple current... most of today's power systems will use a higher switching freq and so therefore require not just a single cap but 3 to 5 in parrallel to handle the ripple current ratings (with an adaquate de-rating margin for long cap life).

Signal Transformer has a catalog with design equations in it... check their web site, they most likely will have the same support info avail there.

Suggestions:
1. Analyze the waveform and determine the capacitor value analytically
2. Estimate a tolerable p-p ripple
3. Use appropriate voltage level for your capacitor
4. Measure the waveform, if possible
