are there any operational differences in using calcium hypochlorite as opposed to sodium hypochlorite for water treament. is it possible that calcium ions from calcium hypochlorite could significantly contribute to water hardness and the associated problem of scaling?

Unless you are feeding huge volumes of chemical, you are not going to run into any scaling issues. For water chlorination, the typical chlorination dosage of 2-6 mg/l will not have any scaling or hardness issues. The reason that sodium hypochlorite is used is because it it less expensive.

The cost of chlorine gas values from supplier to supplier, and from day to day, but its cost relative to sodium and calcium hypochlorite remains relatively constant. On the basis of a survey of national suppliers the cost-per-pound of available chlorine, supplied as a gas, as liquid sodium hypochlorite, and as granular and as tabular calcium hypochlorite was calculated as follows:

Gas: $0.41 per pound x 1.0 = $0.41
NaOCl: $0.98 per gallon x 1.2 = $1.18
Ca(OCl)2:
Granular: $0.98 per pound x 1.52 = $1.49
Tabular: $2.02 per pound x 1.42 = $2.86
