I posted a similar thread (thread664-25480) on the Bicycle Engineering forum, but it seems to be rather un-populated.

I just got a new bike (Giant XTC® NRS 3) and would like to model the bike in Pro/ENGINEER and create other models (kinematics, etc.) as well. Does anyone know were bike components (or reasonable estimations of them) are available? I can work with STEP or IGES files in Pro/E if native files are not available. My first little project is to make a bracket for my daughter's trailer. I want to attach it to the bosses for the rear disk brake caliper attachment, but don't even know the distance center-to-center.

I was not able to find very much from a search on Google.com. Any help would be appreciated.

Best regards,

Matthew Ian Loew

Did you try contacting the company that manufactures the bikes?

Hey, I've got the NRS-1!
What a fantastic bike so far.

That was a very big negative for me. Since by Burley will no longer fit.

I'm going to overhaul/clean the rear suspension over the next week or two.

Sooo.... I could put the calipers to work and sketch out the details for the rear components.

When I'm done. I'll create some cad parts.
And let you know when I'm done.

HI Mlowe, I would suggest that you contact a sales rep for a 3D scanner... pretend that you want to buy one and then ask them to scan your bike as a product demo. It is weasel-like behaviour, but, getting data like that is tough. If this is not your style, I would suggest modeling up a close representation of the bike. If you have a digital camera, you can take a pic. Translate into a BMP of JPG then import it into Pro/E then use it for a template, remember to consider scale. I hope this helps.

Hey MLoew,
man am i glad i found you... i'm looking for the same thing. i am a welding/structural engineer, who designs bicycles. I am working on a design right now and have a few components modelled, though need many more. I wrote a letter to shimano, asking them for models of their product line... its been a month, and nothing... don't think i'm gonna be hearing from them.

anyway, i have been using Pro/E and Pro/Mech for 6 years, have worked for PTC and would be interested in setting up some sort of online virtual part-swap. does anybody have any ideas? (a good method for swapping files).

I'd be interested in helping to create a library of parts. However I am using the Educational edition of ProE (I work in a University). AFAIK I can open all ProE files, but my files can't be opened by the corporate edition of ProE - I'm not absolutely sure of this so correct me if I'm wrong.

One possible way to swap files would be to set up a website where all the parts are stored. I use my own site to allow me access to files when I'm off the local network. Of course there's usually an upper limit to the storage you're allowed. Zipping files, or saving them with the features ungenerated (I think 3Dlogix put up a tip on using this to make files smaller) could help somewhat.

Incidentally, I ride a DMR (4130 Steel Dirt Jump frame) with a selection of bomb proof parts, which I use for mainly XC, though calling it XC doesn't do our trails justice. Broke my last 7 frames through fatigue... [thumbsup2]

peglor, that's how the educational license works I'm afraid.

Forgot to say this in my last post:

If you're using a one wheeled trailer, the twisting forces from the trailer tipping from side to side will load the disk mounts very differently to the way braking forces from a disk brake load them. This may be a fatigue issue (Chances are your warranty will be voided by mounting a trailer on the disk mount anyway).

If it's a two wheeled trailer, with a pivot along the axis of the tow bar, then the loading will be far less likely to do damage to the disk mount.

I did manage to make the trailer bracket. The so called international standard (administered by what standard body?) is indeed 51 mm. The bracket works great; it is for a two wheeled trailer.

I also managed to make a skeleton for the bike (by using the image of the bike from the Giant website) to do some crude kinematics so far. I have not had much time to play with it after that. :-(

Best regards,

Matthew Ian Loew

I am also interested in solid models of moutain bike components, although I work with solidworks I can use any standard file, i.e. step or parasolid.

Wouldn't an easy way of sharing files in the absence of a proper site be to simply post a list of what we have to this forum and then simply ask for them and e-mail direct?

I don't have a lot at the moment, I've just started looking for stuff on the internet and come accross this thread. There doesn't seem to be a lot around so I will probably just get started with the verniers.

I will post a list when I've got something to share.

hey guys thats the best thing to do (get out yer verniers
having worked at gt and mountain cycle ill tell you you wont get any parts from anybody.
ive got a big box of parts we had to buy and model up from scratch
you could be economical with the truth and try and get some cad data but most manufacturers arent very forthcoming with help

Hello

I'm looking to model an entire Mountain Bike in Alias/Maya. Is there a good resource for parts? I can model the simpler stuff (Handlebars, wheels, etc), but the project is really a frame design, so I want to get past the cumbersome task of modeling the derailers, cranks, and brakes.

Any ideas on downloadable/ e-mailable parts? IGES is preferred, OBJ will work too.

Thanks!!!

I'd love to see them. I'm not sure how to use messaging in these forums, so could you please mail them to:

sdorsey at dorseygraphics dot com

I spelled it out so that it would not get picked up by spam bots.

thanks again! If you need any parts, (or anyone else for that matter), let me know and I can make mine available as I get them. They would probably be in some sort of poly format.

ill send you some files you say your preferred format is iges but i gan provide em as maya binary files for maya
if thats your preference (maya) are you on 4.5 or 5.0
The cranks are middleburn rs8s cos a while ago we designed em for middleburn

let me know what your pref is and ill forward them on

I'm using Maya 5, but 4.5 is better because I'm running both on my PC.

Is it alright if I pass these on to others who request bike parts?

Thanks!
