I need help solving a hardware deployment problem for a client! I've got just over 1500sq ft of floor space + 300-400 sq ft max for IT data center. I've got to get 18-20 3D CAD operators, plus 4-5 admin & managers into this space. Workstation configuration will depend upon job function of each employee, but minimum configuration will be Core 2 Quad with 2GB RAM, NVIDIA 9800GT. Maximum configuration (at this point)will be Dual Quad Core Xeons, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA Quadro FX 1700 x 2 (quad monitor config).

For those of you out there who manage or operate in small or medium-sized office environments, how do you manage the PC real estate, noise, & heat issues in limited spaces? How do you plan for growth? Your help is appreciated!

That's 60 sq ft per person. That is what my cubicle is, in which I have two computers, an uncomfortable stool for visitors, my filing cabinets, and a very large bookcase. However, that doesn't allow for walkways and central facilities such as kitchen or conference rooms.

"How do you plan for growth? "

Are you a manager?

forget the cubicles, you don't have room. Think more along the lines of a computer lab at college where you have nothing more than a chair and room for a steno pad on your lap...

you will not be able to manage noise much, other than noise reducing wall, ceiling and floor coverings. White noise generator might help. you won't have room for growth unless you can build a second level. Check with the fire marshall to see if you will be exceeding the max occupancy of the building...

"uncomfortable stool" A.K.A. the "Cuckoo chair". Aside from the space issues, heat will be a huge problem. We are fairly well spaced here. It's December and sub-zero outside. The A/C is still running.

Obviously too much hot air being created in your office, Steve. Are there many managers in there? Too many grouchy-old-Engineers? Or maybe just a couple of PhD's? [poke] [poke]

[cheers]

I just did a PhD count here among the technical staff: 8 of 15. Looks like they're taking over. No wonder we need the extra A/C.
