CAESAR II Hoop Stress

Hi,

I have a 2.875" x 0.375 pipe in a CAESAR II analysis. I am using ASME B31.8 Section VIII. The issue is that the hoop stress is increasing when an external load vector is applied to the model. Without the external load the hoop stress matches the hand calc. I am also able to reproduce this on a test model.

I am not sure why this is happening, if anyone has some insight I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Are you sure is occurred in hoop stress, instead of longitudinal or combined stress? what is your load combination?

External forces are not considered in hoop stress because hoop stress is primary membrane stress that is primarily caused by pressure (Internal & External).

The external forces will be taken into account when dealing with longitudinal stresses and/or combined stresses
