calculate landfill liner cover area

I primarily utilize ACAD Civil 3D for my work. Just starting to break into the civil / environmental engineering field and want to know how I can calculate the square footage of a final cover that our firm wants to place on an existing landfill that is full. I can use ACAD to calculate the total volume of the landfill area, but not sure about using it to calculate SF on final cover. If it is a soil or clay cap would it not be in cubic feet in lieu of square feet?

New to all of this ~ can anyone give any suggestions or advice?

Get the area of the footprint, (square feet) and then use that and cap thickness to get cubic feet required.

I'm not sure I exactly understand your question. If you're asking how to use the software to calculate area I don't know. If you're asking how these projects are usually packaged for bidding and construction I can tell you a bit. Landfill liners and covers are usually bid either as lump sum items or if unit price are specified as measured by plan area measure. And I know it sounds trivial but the sloped sections of a landfill or cover can add appreciably to the volume of liner or cover material required.

We used to do a lot of landfill work and used a digital terrain modelling program called LSS which could calculate the difference in volume of two models....
- Model 1 is the uncapped but full landfill.
- Model 2 is the final levels following capping works

Subtract Model 1 from Model 2 and you have the volume of cover fill.

I'm not sure if ACAD 3D does the same thing though.
