Calculate steel weight of a vessel.

Could anyone please share any method, by rule of thumb, to calculate the steelweight of any ship in general, and a 50m coastguard vessel in particular, for the use in the early project phase. I.e. LxBxHx "C" = Weight or preferably somethin more exact?

Don't think it works quite that way.

However, you know that it must weigh less than it's displaced volume of water.

Yes it does. Its a statistical method to get an approximate weight for estamating price in the early phase of a project when I only have intended main main dimensions of the vessel. Each type of vessel (or each yard) have different methods to estimate weight, and I am intrested in a publication, standard, or textbook dealing wih these issues.
