Hello,

I'm working on designing a very custom flyback transformer and I'm needing to have the two EE core halves machined and ground to size from solid ferrite. The last step I need is to calculate the air gap between the central core leg but I haven't found a good reference in text or online. The few equations that I've found seem to be contradictory and I haven't found a good reliable source for calculating air gap of a flyback core. Any help or references would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Ken

Googling "flyback transformer gap calculation" turned up quite a few useful papers with the calcs involved, even coming at it from different directions.

The textbook 'Soft ferrites' by Edgar Snelling is well worth acquiring. It's long out of print and used copies aren't exactly cheap but it's an excellent reference which explains the principles of design with clarity and precision.
