Hello. I am interested in calculating wind story shears for a 7 story building. Following the thread topic on wind base shear (I know codes have changed since), are each story shear calc as simple as taking the windward + leeward wind pressure times the width of that side of the building of which the wind is perpendicular to times the tributary area of that story? By tributary area of that story, I assume it is [for a 13 ft story height] 13 ft x building width. And then do this for the other side of the building.

My understand is the summation of the wind story shears shall approximately equal the wind base shear. Does this sound correct?

Please advise. Thank you.

I'm not sure you have it. The wind shear at each floor is the shear at that floor plus the sum of all the other floors above. So each floor, in your terminology, has a base shear.

Ah, good catch Hokie. It may be better to describe what Bacon is calculating as the story force. Where you are correct, the story shear would be the cumulative story force for that level and above.

Ahh that makes sense. So what I am asking for is the story force then right? And the story ahead is the summation of all the story forces?
